Trends in consumption of luxurious goods
I think you all may be aware that now people tend to use luxurious goods, especially those who are from middle class. This is seen as different from ten years ago which Cambodian people had television, radio, etc. as luxurious goods. Now, these goods are necessity goods as even at rural areas they have TV and radios. In stead people use updated TV with thin screen. They use last update mobile phone and motorcycle like Dream 100, Viva and others.
People living is now modern. People have money to deposit or save at banks. They use ATM card to withdraw money and buy products. Along the roads, you can see people drive good cars, good motorcycles, go to shops with air conditions. At night, they go to restaurants. Business transaction is still until night. Okay, you can see it is very different from the last ten years.
One more thing I would like to share with you is about the drinking of beer. Ten years ago, people who drink beer thought that drinking beer is for about those who are rich and the beer is luxurious goods. Now, it is normal because even workers or farmers often drink beer at rice fields or in a small cottage. Before they drink Sra Teuk Thnout. Now, they drink beer. According to an estimate in Chinese New Year in January 2008, there was needs of ten containers of beer in only Battambang province. Thus, now you can see the tendency in the consumption of luxurious goods in Cambodia.
The price of goods is increasing every day and the demands of goods and services also increase. The supply is also increased but most of supply is completed by the importation. Thus, there should be an increase in domestic production which in business sense is the business opportunity. But business opportunity is only identified, but it is hard to do or run a business. To my understanding, I just think that we have to be clever or logical in consuming goods as in according to our social status and money available.
